Hot services change how the hair behaves. Cold services change the condition it is in. Most good plans use both, in the right order.

Hot services
A formula goes on, then heat from the iron sets it. The goal is to change how the hair behaves.
- Smooths frizz and seals the surface, so hair reflects more light

Cold services

What is actually inside a strand
Every hair has up to three layers. Smoothing works on the outside one. Repair works on the middle one. Knowing which is which is most of the diagnosis.
Why hair frizzes,
and why it shines
The cuticle is a layer of overlapping scales, a little like roof tiles. Lying flat, they protect the cortex and reflect light, so hair looks glossy.
Heat, lightening and brushing lift them. Humidity then gets underneath, the hair swells unevenly, and you get frizz. Every smoothing service is, at heart, a way of laying those scales back down.

Porosity, elasticity and bonds decide what your hair can carry. Choose one to see what it means.
Porosity
How easily water gets into the hair and out again. Low porosity hair has tight scales and products sit on top. High porosity hair drinks everything in fast, loses it just as fast, and dries dull. Lightening, heat and old smoothing all push porosity up.
Elasticity
How far a strand can stretch and still spring back. Good elasticity means a strong cortex. Hair that snaps, or stretches and stays stretched, is telling you the inside is weak. Hot services wait until that is fixed.
Bonds
Strength and shape come from bonds inside the cortex. Lightening breaks a large share of them. That is why blonde hair feels fragile, and why the strongest smoothing is not offered on it here.

ask three things
These questions are worth asking wherever you book. A studio that is confident in its work will be glad you did.
What product will be used?
Every smoothing line is different. Ask for the brand and the product name before the visit.
Can I see the safety data sheet?
The FDA warns that some smoothing products release formaldehyde when they are heated. A safety data sheet shows what is in the formula. It is a fair question in any salon, this one included.
Is my hair a candidate?
Lightened, over processed or breaking hair changes the answer. A good specialist will sometimes say not yet.
